London – Part Three
Gauthier- Now I don’t know how I discovered this place, probably a lot of internet digging, but it is a rare find. This small and understated townhouse can be easily overlooked: little signage, on a squirrelly street near the theatre district. As we sit alone on the main floor staring at the large fireplace and equally-sized flower arrangement we wonder if we have been transported to someone’s home, but she forgot she was having guests arrive.
Over the meadow and through the woods we go to Hedone in West Chiswick. It’s a good 30 minutes out and only has about 40 seats so don’t dare head out without a reservation. I was fascinated with the resto because the self-trained, Swedish born chef, Mikael Jonsson, started as a blogger and learned his craft by trial, error and elbow grease. Wow, how fortunate that he did! The food was superb. Tornadoes of beef are so tender and juicy it looks as if the chef prepared each one separately to ensure their consistency. My Chicken Bresse could not be shared. Yup! I went on strike. It is completely rare and out of character for me not to let my dinner partner have a bite of anything, but in this case, my mantra was “I’ll bite your hands off.” Bresse, a region in France, is to chicken, what Champagne is to sparkling wine. And I don’t know what they do to those little birdies to get them oh so tender and flavorful– dare I say, chickeny!!!– but I’ve never had anything like that in the states and did not plan to forgo a single bite. Wow.
Lastly, a quick cocktail idea from the bar at Claridges. Although I’m often in the Napa Valley I’ve never had a drink with fresh, pulverized grapes. Take one part Millers Gin, add a dash of angoustora bitters, a teaspoon of honey and 2 tablespoons of fresh grape juice. Shake it up and serve with sushi. Brilliant!!!
